Working Class Party Return to its Roots
Communist Party Holds Convention in City of its Birth
What: 28th National Convention of the Communist Party, USA
When: Friday, July 1 – Sunday, July 3, 2005
Where: Palmer House Hilton Hotel, 17 East Monroe, Chicago, IL
Every few years, the Communist Party, USA (CPUSA) gathers members from around the country to elect its leadership, discuss current issues, and to set the future course of the organization.
This year, the CPUSA is holding its National Convention in Chicago, IL, the city where it was founded in 1919. Chicago has a working-class tradition dating from the movement for the eight-hour day. The Communist Party has been an integral part of that history.
The CPUSA is a working-class political party rooted in the radical traditions of the U.S. and the international experience of socialism, a system where human needs replace corporate greed as the driving force in society. For nearly ninety years the Communist Party has been a key part of the ongoing struggle for labor rights, women’s rights, civil rights, peace, the other social issues faced by the U.S. people, and the struggle for socialism in the USA.
Nearly 500 member delegates from around the country as well as domestic and international guests will attend the convention, including from Iraq and Vietnam. Friday morning features an opening address by CPUSA National Chairman Sam Webb and the plenary discussion that follows.
