October 27, Chicago: Saturday afternoon, three hundred people rallied under blue skies in a biting wind at Chicago's Buckingham Fountain to protest the U.S. war in Afghanistan. The action was organized by the Chicago Coalition Against War & Racism as part of ongoing efforts to oppose militarism, racism and attacks on civil liberties in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

Mosques in Villa Park and Chicago's south side sent busloads of community residents to support the action. Protesters marched from the fountain to the Tribune Plaza through the heart of the Loop commercial district, where many shoppers and passers-by joined in chants to oppose U.S. bombing and attacks on Muslims and Arabs. The action followed a morning Coalition-sponsored teach-in at Columbia College.

The Chicago Coalition Against War & Racism is an alliance of more than 35 local peace, social action, and religious groups, as well as hundreds of individuals, united in opposition to the war in Afghanistan, attacks on Muslim and immigrant communities, and the erosion of civil liberties in the U.S. The group formed on September 18 at a community anti-war forum attended by approximately 400 people. More than 1,000 people attended Coalition-convened emergency demonstrations in Chicago's loop on October 7 and 8, in response to the beginning of U.S. and British military action against Afghanistan.

In its public statements, the Coalition has stated, "We mourn the victims of September 11, and all victims of war. We call on our government to prevent the further loss of innocent lives by ceasing military attacks against Afghanistan."
