- Latest Update -

The Chicago Sun-Times announced Thursday morning that former Israeli general and Likud political leader Ariel Sharon -- the butcher of Sabra and Shatila -- will speak to the UJC General Assembly at the Hyatt Regency Chicago at 7:00 AM on Tuesday, Nov. 14, following Israeli Prime Minister Barak's appearance at the UIC Pavilion Monday evening. Latest reports indicate that security for both events will very strong-with Chicago Police preparations rivaling those taken during the 1996 Democratic National Convention.

It was Sharon who during Israel's invasion of Lebanon in 1982 supervised the indiscriminate slaughter of thousands of Palestinian refugees by Lebanese rightist mercenaries in Beirut refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila in September of that year.

Sharon later went on to become a major political figure in the rightwing Likud Bloc. His provocative appearance in Jerusalem at the Haram Al Sharif and Al Aqsa Mosque in late September - accompanied by 1000 Israeli soldiers, border guards and police - ignited the latest conflict that has left over 180 Palestinians dead, and thousands wounded at the hands of Israeli soldiers and armed settlers.

Now more than ever, Palestinian, Arab American, peace and progressive activists are determined to mobilize Monday and Tuesday to protest the US visit of these war criminals.

Please contact the Arab American Action Network (AAN) at (312)436-6060 (Hatem) for more details ASAP.

- An urgent appeal to progressive activists throughout Chicago area -

The current violence in Palestine -- perpetuated by an Israeli government that ignores human rights and international law -- has injured thousands of Palestinians and left over 180 dead. This most recent conflict erupted in the wake of seven bitterly disappointing years of
'peace' negotiations that have consigned Palestinians to sweeping economic and political repression and done little more than define the terms for Palestinian capitulation.

The dead include 12-year-old Muhammed Rami Al Durra, whose murder has been seared in people's consciousness -- not as an isolated act, but as an emblem of the daily treatment Palestinians endure under a brutal and untenable occupation. At the same time, Israeli settlers have taken to the streets to terrorize Palestinian villages, and Israeli civilians continue to fire live ammunition at Palestinians from behind the protective wing of Israeli
security forces, in a wave of violence Israeli peace groups have called a pogrom.

Palestinians have endured decades of displacement and the forcible dispossession of their homes and land. Millions live in exile and those who remain endure a brutal military occupation in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Jerusalem, or live as third-class citizens under apartheid conditions inside the Israeli state.

The U.S. government bankrolls Israel's occupation with $5 billion a year in military and economic aid. When Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak and war criminal Ariel Sharon come to Chicago on Nov. 13 and 14, let them know you do not support this brutal policy of occupation - and let the U.S. and Israeli governments know you oppose and will refuse to fund their abuse of the Palestinian people.
