Illinois Green Party Calls for Understanding

The Illinois Green Party strongly condemns the criminal acts of terrorism perpetrated at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 11th, 2001 and joins with people around the world in mourning and extending condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of these tragedies.

“These were criminal acts of violence and those responsible must be held accountable,” said E.G. Hughes, Illinois Green Party Treasurer from Carbondale. “The perpetrators should be brought before an international tribunal and prosecuted for crimes against humanity. That is why the Illinois Green Party calls on all Greens of every nation to join us in demanding that these parties be brought to justice.”

The Illinois Green Party also condemns the use of military forces now being assembled by our current administration. “We are opposed to all bombing or missile attacks, “conventional” or otherwise. Using these weapons will only result in the death of more innocent victims that will merely serve to harden the resolve of those who possess grievances against the US and will fuel more hatred against the United States,” said Melinda Brady Schmit, Illinois Green Party Secretary.

“These misguided ‘retaliatory attacks’ against innocent Arabs and Muslims must stop. As Americans we must also remain vigilant in upholding democracy in the United States and call on our fellow citizens to thoroughly question our leaders' attempts at using these tragedies to curb our civil liberties and constitutional rights.”

The only way to stop terrorism is to address the injustices at its roots. For these reasons, the Illinois Green Party calls for a frank and open dialogue to elicit broad and substantive changes in US foreign policy. “Violence only begets more violence; hatred only begets more hatred,” added, Hannah Podlevsky, Illinois Green Party Executive Committee member. “Only by addressing the real cause of these acts will we arrive at real solutions, only through true social justice will we experience security, and only through a world wide effort of understanding will we find peace.”
