A TRULY SCARY PRE-HALLOWEEN AND PRE-ELECTION EVENT

A Ghost of Libraries Past to Appear at Acme Art Works, 1741 N. Western Avenue

Thursday October 21st at 7pm.
$5 donation, no one turned away

The Librarian, a highly acclaimed election-year thriller by Edgar Award winner Larry Beinhart (author of American Hero, basis for the film Wag the Dog) depicts "nebbish" librarian David Goldberg, moonlighting for an aging and ailing conservative billionaire who wants to have a memorial library established in his name. Goldberg discovers that the old moneybags is part of a conspiracy to steal a U.S. presidential election on behalf of a reactionary incumbent Republican from Texas (although this story is SUPPOSED to take place many years in the future). A little knowledge becomes a dangerous thing, as our librarian flees a right-wing death squad while researching this very implausible state of affairs.

Published this year by Nation Books, imprint of The Nation magazine, The Librarian is available in paperback for $15.95 and is a relatively quick read.

To be presented by former (nebbish?) Chicago librarian DAVID WILLIAMS, who recently took early retirement after receiving an offer he couldn't refuse and now lives in Madison, Wisconsin, but returns frequently to haunt the City of Big Shoulders and its libraries, bookstores and cafes.

Responding will be local poet, bibliophile and inadvertent comedian BOB RASHKOW.

A truly scary time is promised, mitigated only by refreshments in the Blackwater Cafe, a little partying afterwards, and a lot of progressive and left-wing whistling in the dark as we lurch toward November 2nd.

Sponsored by Open University of the Left and Democratic Socialists of America Chicago chapter. For more information, call 773-384-5797 or email oulchicago (at) yahoo.com
