34 Years after Chicago '68 Press Conference Says: Give the
Permits for Central Park

An ad hoc coalition of organizations in Chicago has been
working, since March, to send crowds of people from the
Midwest to participate in the protests at the Republican
National Convention under the name of the website,
_ChicagoNewYork.Net._ We of the Ad Hoc coalition are joining
with other activists and concerned Chicagoans and calling on
New York City to allow THE PEOPLE to "assemble for Redress
of Grievances" in Central Park -- a Park originally designed
for THE PEOPLE.

In Chicago in 1968 _ when presidential pursuit of the war in
Vietnam led many to protest at the Democrats convention--
DNC protesters were refused a permit for a rally in Grant
Park. The Police Riot in Chicago at that presidential
nominating convention has become an historic example of the
result of the exercise of arbitrary power to suppress
protest. Now, 34 years later, the City of New York has
repeatedly denied permits for major protests during the RNC
in Central Park. Have we learned nothing in 34 years?

Residents of New York City (and people who know about this
denial world wide) are seething about the City's
intransigence. The denial of permits for Central Park is so
indefensible that Jimmy Breslin of New York Newsday called
it Òa certification of government insanity.Ó Even New York
Times editorials have called for the granting of a permit.
From Poetry Readings to City Council Resolutions there have
been international actions to call for the permit. The city
officials claim the grass will be damaged even though the
grass planted in Central Park was chosen for its ability to
thrive under the feet of large crowds. Activists in New
York have responded, "This isn't about the grass, It's about
our future."

United For Peace and Justice (UFPJ), Now to Stop War and End
Racism (ANSWER) as well as others have filed suit demanding
the permits to Rally in Central Park and we will gather in
Grant Park to stand in solidarity with that demand. To
press the case we will bring together veterans from the 1968
protest and activists of the new generation. And we will
join across the political spectrum united with one single
call:

GIVE THE PERMITS FOR ALL CENTRAL PARK RALLIES!!
