FBI Releases People Detained at Midway Airport

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The FBI (news - web sites) released three people of Middle Eastern descent who had been briefly detained at Chicago's Midway airport on Friday, an FBI spokesman said.

An airline employee identified the three as possibly fitting the profile of the ``watch list'' of those wanted for questioning in connection with the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon (news - web sites) in Washington, the spokesman said.

The three were detained and brought to the FBI for questioning, and the airport was closed for hours. The spokesman said once the FBI was satisfied they did not fit the profile, they were released and the airport reopened. No other information about them was released.

Several U.S. airports have been temporarily closed because of security concerns after hijacked planes slammed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Tuesday, decimating the twin towers and damaging the U.S. military headquarters.

U.S. airports were gradually getting back to normal on Friday. Midway is the second-largest airport in the Chicago area.
