Are documentaries changing the face of American Politics?

With the growing success of Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” many other social and political documentaries suddenly appear to be coming out of the woodwork. Touted by the right as propaganda and by the left as the truth we’ve all been deprived of, these documentaries are changing the political climate of the United States by showing behind-the-scenes footage and exposing discrepancies between word and action by this notorious Bush II Administration.

Recently, Robert Greenwald’s latest film “Outfoxed” has recently flooded the alternative press and message boards. #1 on Amazon.com and backed by MoveOn.org, tens of thousands of Americans are hosting house parties showing this film which takes a critical look at Fox News.

Lesser known, but popular among 9/11 researchers is Alex Jones’ “9/11: The Road to Tyranny” and “Masters of Terror.” Both of these films pre-date Moore’s ‘Fahrenheit.’ They examine, sometimes with sensationalism, the workings of the US Government and the lies around 9/11.

Another film, which also pre-dates Moore’s record-breaking documentary, is Christine Rose’s Liberty Bound. “Liberty Bound” has enjoyed a limited theatrical release in Paris and a growing audience on this side of the Atlantic. On July 4th, Ms. Rose released a promotional run of DVDs to North America, and the DVDs are going fast.

“Liberty Bound” has a significant amount of international press and success. This is especially impressive considering this is Ms. Rose’s first film. It was picked up at the American Film Market in February 2004 by French Distributor Take Off (www.takeoff-editions.com). Currently playing in Paris to sold-out audiences, Take Off plans a nationwide release in France this September, closely followed by the DVD.

In North America, Ms. Rose announced a Nationwide Promotional Tour of “Liberty Bound” to run between August 15, 2004 and Election Day (November 2, 2004).

“In the true grassroots tradition, Americans will be able to see “Liberty Bound” all over the country: in theatres, art centers, house parties, and even on the sides of buildings!” Ms. Rose states. “This is democracy in action. Together, we will educate the populace and affect the outcome of this election.”
