Senate Decision Today: See you in the streets

Today the Senate puts the discriminatory FMA to a vote, and we’re going to tell them how we feel. At the corner of Halsted & Roscoe at 7 pm, we will have a rally- either a protest Or a celebration- in response to the vote. Watch the news today, and meet us in the streets tonight.

This morning, the United States Senate will put the Federal Marriage Amendment to a procedural vote. The amendment, as originally proposed by Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colorado), would add these two sentences to the Constitution: "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman."

If the Senate votes for cloture, debate on rewriting the constitution to mandate second-class citizenship for gays and lesbians will be shut down, forcing a vote on the Amendment itself. We will meet at the corner of Halsted & Roscoe streets to rally in response to the actions of the Senate- Protesting a forcible act of discrimination or celebrating the protection of equal rights. While a vote denying cloture means that the Senate will not take up this issue again before the close of the legislative session, the FMA will not die tomorrow. If we celebrate, we will be doing so knowing that the struggle for equal marriage rights goes on, and we must continue to educate and advocate around this very important issue.
