Bloomington, IN--Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business in Bloomington will be host to the Group of Eight’s annual pre-summit conference on June 3 and 4. The conference will bring together global economic advisors, academics and journalists in preparation for the annual G8 summit meeting on Sea Island in Georgia, June 8-10.
“Security, Prosperity and Freedom: Why America Needs the G8” is the title of this year’s conference. According to Indiana University the meeting will focus on how the G8 might “contribute to U.S. security and prosperity, and to the promotion of democracy around the world now and in the future.”
A few of the notable presenters will include Donato Masciandaro, consultant to the World Bank and Bernhard May, of the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin. A full schedule of presentations and other information can be found at www.kelley.iu.edu/ciber/G82004.cfm.
The G8 Summit is an annual meeting which brings together the world’s leading industrialized nations. The G8 has unofficially dictated global policy making for nearly 35 years, claiming leadership in such areas as distribution of wealth and resources and international terrorism. This year’s summit is hosted by George W. Bush.
In the past the G8 summit has been the target of massive demonstrations, such as in Genoa, Italy in 2001 when over 300,000 people protested for four days. Critics charge the G8 with a lack of concern for smaller nations, policy making which harms the poor, inciting international conflict and for being undemocratic due to the Group’s lack of public accountability.
The presentations will be given in room 1008 of the Kelley School's Graduate and Executive Education Center, located at 1275 E. 10th St. Registration is required to attend the conference, which is otherwise open to the public.
