DNC: Boston, protesters agree on permit process

Boston, MA, Jun. 2 (UPI) -- Boston officials agreed to process protest permits within 15 days in a settlement with groups planning to demonstrate during the Democratic National Convention.
Officials had planned to review permit requests on an open-ended basis, a proposal that drew protests from several areas, including a band of anti-abortion rights groups that filed suit to have the plan changed.

In a settlement with the groups, Boston officials set a 15-day limit on permit applications, ruled groups of fewer than 21 people could protest without permits, unless they interfere with traffic and said beginning July 10, applications related to emerging events would be processed in two days, the Boston Globe reported. The city, however, retained the right to reject protest applications if the requesting group was an "unreasonable danger to the health and safety" of the public.

Legal challenges to the city's plans to deal with protests during the convention could be filed regarding the area set aside for protesters. Demonstrators want to be within sight and hearing range of delegates to the convention.

The Democratic National Convention is scheduled for July 26-29, during which Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., is expected to be nominated by the party to run for president.
