This forum will present a broad overview and updated information on the escalation of political repression against the growing anti-war and global justice movement in the United States. We will examine how repression is linked with illegal U.S. interventions abroad, and what peace and justice activists can do – and have been doing – to resist.

    Speakers include:

Mara Verheyden-Hilliard: Partnership for Civil Justice, Washington, DC. Noted civil liberties attorney and activist.

Elton Davis: Catholic Worker, Des Moines, Iowa. One of the anti-war activists targeted by the U.S. government for a grand jury investigation of an anti-war conference at Drake University. In the wake of the huge national protest against this repressive move, the government cancelled the grand jury and subpoenas.

Standish Willis: Chicago Council of Black Lawyers. Leading Chicago African-American defense attorney, active in fighting government repression and police brutality.

Alex Vitale: Activist and professor from New York City. Worked to challenge the government’s repression of anti-war and anti-occupation protests last February, currently active in preparing for this summer’s Republican National Convention.

Jeff Frank: (Moderator) Activist, attorney with the National Lawyers Guild, recent author of Law & Order - Ashcroft’s Offensive, published on Z-Net.

    Discussion Topics:

  • Cointelpro 2004: Surveillance, spying and infiltration by local, state and federal authorities of peace and global justice groups, demonstrations, and other activities.

  • The Miami Model: Restrictive permits, deployment of a massive 'security presence' and widescale police violence, preemptive arrests, repressive temporary local ordinances and other legal maneuvers to restrict free speech and disrupt protests.
