African Liberation Day was founded on April 15, 1958, spearheaded by Kwame Nkrumah and the Convention People’s Party of Ghana, on the occasion of the First Conference of Independent African States held in Accra, Ghana. Initially called African Freedom Day, it was founded to “mark each year the onward progress of the liberation movement and to symbolize the determination of the People of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation”. At the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, the name was changed to African Liberation Day. African Liberation Day is celebrated throughout the African world each year on or around the 25th of May.
