Native American Man Running From San Francisco to
Philadelphia to Demand Justice and a New Trial for
Mumia Abu-Jamal

CHICAGO - Zachary Runningwolf Brown, a Native American man of the Blackfeet tribe, is running from San Francisco to Philadelphia to demand justice and a new trail for Pennsylvania death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal. Runningwolf arrived in Chicago on Wednesday. While here, he will attend the following events:

Thursday: Reception at News and Letters office, 37 S. Wabash, Ste. 1440 at 6:15pm.
Friday, he will speak at Jumping Bean Café at 1439 W. 18th St. at 7pm.

Mr. Brown's journey started at the Federal Building in San Francisco on May 14th. Since then, he has wound his way through America, from Lake Tahoe, Nevada to Pine Ridge in South Dakota, down to Leavenworth, Kansas (where he met with jailed Native American leader Leonard Peltier) and recently across the Mississippi River on his way to Chicago.

"Leaders must cross color lines," explains
Runningwolf. "As a Native American leader, I am
responsible not only to my people, but also to all
other minorities in this country. We must strengthen the bonds between us - beginning with mutual respect - to break the racial boundaries imposed on us by the dominant culture.

It is time for Native Americans to build and lead a multi-ethnic coalition."

Runningwolf believes a crucial element of the
multi-ethnic coalition he envisions is the fight for justice for Mumia Abu-Jamal. Abu-Jamal has been on Pennsylvania's death row for almost 20 years now, despite a growing worldwide movement that contends he is innocent of the crime he has been convicted of.

This is not the first time Runningwolf has run for
justice. In 1999, he ran from Oakland, California's Inter-Tribal Friendship House to Browning, Montana, home of the Blackfeet Nation Reservation in order to draw attention to adopted Native American children and the 1978 American Indian Child Welfare Act. In 2000,
Runningwolf again ran from the Inter-Tribal Friendship House to all 28 gaming casinos in California in order to ask them to share their wealth with Native Americans living in California cities, who account for 60% of the Native American population in California.
