Chilean students riot during president Lagos speech
May 21, Valparaiso (Chile) - Students from all over Chile converged on Valparaiso on the day of the president's annual address to the nation. Riots broke out, and Molotov firebombs were thrown at police and their water cannons. Students constructed barricades in the streets as they fled towards a hill. One of the barricades was three metres tall. Clashes went on for more than two hours, and at least 93 people were arrested.
The day before, masked students had clashed with riot police for hours outside the University of Valparaiso.
