Chicago Media Action alert re: CAN TV and the Stone ordinance; call your alderman now!

City alderman Bernard Stone introduced an ordinance
this morning (May 5) which would solve the funding problem for CAN TV, but we need to act now.
In the Chicago Media Action newsletter for May (available free by emailing mailinglist (at) chicagomediaaction.org), we hinted that a Chicago City Council effort might be underway to remedy the funding for CAN TV (Chicago Access Network Television, the fleet of Chicago's public access TV channels).

The good news is that such an initiative was introduced today before the City Council. City alderman Bernard Stone introduced an ordinance
this morning which would solve the funding problem for CAN TV. Read a dispatch about the ordinance here:

We have to fight hard and fast in support of this ordinance. One of the few remaining open media venues in Chicago may depend on it. This is a winnable fight -- if we act now.

If you live in Chicago, please take a few minutes right now to call your council alderman. Be sure to encourage her or him to support the Stone ordinance which would give to CAN TV one-fifth of the City's cable franchise fee. The list of city council members, and their phone numbers, is available in Chicago by calling 311, and is also available online:

If you live outside of Chicago, you can contact Mayor Daley by using this online contact form:

Thanks in advance for your good work.
