CHICAGO, Aug. 20 - A delegation of 7 protestors arrived at the door of the Italian Consulate at 500 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1850.

Officers Richards and Wagner of the 18th District blocked the doorway to the offices, saying, "Please don't go in."

"We'd like to speak to the Consulate General," said Tedd Cain.

"Can you tell us why we're not being allowed in?" asked Bridget Broderick.

Both officers remained silent.

"What if I want to apply for a visa?" asked Cain.

After a pause of about half a minute Officer Richards responded, "No one from the consulate is available to receive you."

"He doesn't know who I am," responded Cain.

"On what basis are we being denied access?" asked Broderick.

"Okay, you've made your point. You can protest outside in front of the building," said Richards.

A moment later Chancellor Brigli, accompanied by an assistant, emerged from an adjacent door and said that he would meet with two of the protestors at 12:30. After exchanging names the protestors boarded elevators to descend to the ground floor.

Four of them got off the elevator and entered the Ecuadorian Consulate, Suite 1510, and requested an appointment to express their solidarity with the people of Ecuador. They received an appointment for this Wednesday, at 12:00 noon.
