Anti-government demonstrations sprang up across Spain on Saturday night, on the eve of a general election, in protest at the initial blaming of the Basque separatist group ETA for rail bombs in Madrid that killed 200 people.

In Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao, thousands of protesters gathered in squares, furiously denouncing the ruling Popular Party of Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar. Protesters were reportedly shouting, "Don't manipulate our dead!"

The government's election candidate Mariano Rajoy turned up at Popular Party's HQ in Madrid to denounce the protest. "It is illegal and illegitimate," he told reporters.
