John Kerry's First 'Bimbo Eruption'

In what is likely to be the first of many disclosures of faulty character, Kerry denies rumors of affairs, even as names of his paramours emerge
February 14, 2004 -- Democratic front-runner John Kerry yesterday said allegations of a relationship with a young woman are "untrue" and told his supporters not to worry about anything in his past.
"I just deny it categorically. It's rumor. It's untrue. Period," Kerry told reporters traveling with his campaign.

After denying the report, Kerry added: "And that's the last time I intend to."

Rumors about Kerry's personal life have been swirling for days, sparking intense discussions among his own supporters at a time when he seems close to locking up the Democratic nomination to challenge President Bush.

Kerry was first asked about them earlier yesterday by syndicated WFAN talk-show host Don Imus.

The Massachusetts senator replied: "There's nothing to report, there's nothing to talk about, I'm not worried about it - no. The answer is no."

Imus - who noted he's backing Kerry for president - had gently asked if anything was "going to come up" that might pose problems, including a report of alleged indiscretions with an "intern" on the Drudge Report, the Web site that broke the story of Bill Clinton's sex-and-lies with Monica Lewinsky.

Imus followed up by asking: "So I'm not going to have to jump off your bandwagon?"

Kerry replied: "No sir. No sprained ankles for you."

A woman whose name has been linked to Kerry but who is not an intern isn't talking to the press, said a man who answered her cell phone.

The Kerry campaign didn't respond to questions about whether Kerry knows the woman or whether he had invited her to Washington to discuss his campaign with her.

Kerry has been married twice.

He has two daughters with his first wife, Julia Thorne, whom he married in 1970. They separated in 1982 and were divorced in 1988. Kerry married Teresa Heinz, widow of ketchup heir Sen. John Heinz (R-Pa.), in 1995.

In 1997, Kerry, a Catholic, obtained a church annulment of his first marriage. His ex-wife, who supports him politically, said the proceeding was "disrespectful" but she didn't fight it.

The Boston Globe quoted sources as saying that Teresa Heinz wanted the annulment because she is a devout Catholic and couldn't participate fully in church ceremonies if she was married to a divorced Catholic.
