Bomb Blast at Genoa Police Station

A letter bomb exploded at a police station in the Italian city of Genoa, which is due to host the G8 summit later this week. No-one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
One police officer, 20-year-old Stefano Storri, suffered first- and second-degree burns to his face and hands when he opened the package at a station in the San Fruttuoso area in the city. In a separate incident, Italian police sealed off the area around the provincial police headquarters after a suspect van was seen there. However, after explosives experts gained access to the vehicle, it turned out to be a false alarm.

A spokesperson for the Genoa Social Forum, umbrella group coordinating the demonstrations and counter summit, said the bomb was an attack on the movement and a extremely serious provocation. Russo Spena, MP for the communist PRC went even further pointing at potential involvement of secret services. Pecoraro Scanio, MP for the Green Party, claimed this is an attempt to revive the "strategy of tension" of the seventies. Then, the collusion of far-right elements with both US and Italian intellegence services in a "terrorist" spree, managed to destroy arguably the most powerful leftwing movement in Western Europe.
