Meeting: Lukacs, organization and the power of negativity

July 9 meeting to discuss ongoing relevance of revolutionary and philosopher Georg Lukacs.
The recent publication of a previously unknown manuscript by the Hungarian Marxist Georg Lukacs (1885-1971) has reinvigorated discussion of the relevance of this philosopher and revolutionary. Lukacs's "Tailism and the dialectic", a defense of his 1923 Hegelian Marxist work "History and Class Consciousness" touches on questions of organization and philosophy that, far from being of merely historical interest, have vital meaning for the array of movements opposing capitalism today. Peter Hudis, author of a critical essay on "Tailism and the Dialectic" published in the June 2001 issue of News & Letters (online at www.newsandletters.org/1.06_essay.htm), will discuss Lukacs's interpretation of Marxism and its relevance for our reality.

Monday, July 9
6:30 p.m.
In the office of News & Letters
36 S. Wabash, Room 1440
