Biohazard clad protestors cause ruckus at Chicago grocery giant Jewel Foods.

At about 5:00PM on Tuesday June 26 members of GeneWise, a Chicago group resisting genetic engineering, Earth First! and others united in opposition to the ceaseless and senseless march of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) protested at the Jewel Foods located at 1210 North Clark. The action was in solidarity with large scale protests occurring at San Diego during BioDevistation.

to the ceaseless and senseless march of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) protested at the Jewel Foods located at 1210 North Clark. The action was in solidarity with large scale protests occurring at San Diego during BioDevistation.

Suited in store
Participants swarmed the entrances to the food chain wearing all-white biohazard suits with the slogan "GMOs (Genetically Modified Food) + Our
Food = Consumer Threat!". After a warning not to distribute information inside, one of the participants was asked to leave, by Jewel's management
who "sympathized with what was happening," but, GMO or no GMO, had food to sell. Outside and inside activists engaged the public giving away hundreds
of 'consumer warning' cards. The Jewel manager, instead of calling the police, commented that if his daughter were here she would put on a biohazard suit - he wasn't happy with the FDA or the biotech industry.

The protest focused on the fact that...

->70% of processed foods now contain GMOs in this country

->Genetically engineered foods are not labeled in the United States

->The world's malnourished peoples are being manipulated as spokespersons for these Frankenfoods.

Passing out Cards
Traffic at the Jewel was brisk. The sidewalk, dotted with activists, became a focal point for passers-by curious about all the activity. One woman commented on the biohazard
suits stating "I don't care what the issue is, it's too hot to be in those suits!"

"We're just getting started." stated one of the people in white suits. "If they can get this biotrash out of the food chain in Europe, then we can do it here!"
