Hyde Park Community Meeting on 53rd St. McCondo Plan

An open community meeting to be attended by Alderman Toni Preckwinkle and developer John Kretchmar will be held Monday, June 25, 7:00 pm at the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, 55th and Kenwood.
Hosted by community group 53rd CARRD (53rd Street Committee for Appropriate Retail and Residential Development), the meeting will provide a forum for community residents who will hear Mr. Kretchmar andAld. Preckwinkle's plans for an 8-story luxuryresidential development planned by Mr.
Kretchmar for the combined Mobil/McDonald's site on east 53rd Street, which has been contaminated by Mobil Oil Company's leaking gasoline holding tanks.

Residents near the site of the proposed development are alarmed at its size and location across a busystreet from the expanding Murray Language Academy.

With the potential of adding over 500 new residents to an already saturated area, the proposed 8-story development would tower over its 1, 2 and 3-story neighbors. Providing only 140 parking spaces, the development threatens to create traffic and parking gridlock on 53rd Street which, along with its residential side streets, already suffers from crushing parking and traffic problems. Supported by Ald. Preckwinkle and McDonald's Corporation, Mr. Kretchmar intends to include a drive-through McDonald's on the ground floor, a further concern for neighborhood residents who fear for the safety of Murray's schoolchildren as they cross the street to use the fast-food outlet.

53rd CARRD will be presenting the community's extensive list of concerns to Mr. Kretchmar and Ald. Preckwinkle on Monday evening, and will focus on the community's more appropriate development ideas for the site.
