Join a downtown march and rally, organized by the Grassroots Collaborative, to push for a new amnesty for the estimated 6 million undocumented immigrants in the US (nearly 300,000 of these immigrants live in Illinois).

Saturday, September 23, 2000
10:00 AM to 12:00 NOON

Gather at Daley Plaza (Clark and Washington)
Chicago, IL and march to the Federal Building
Dearborn and Jackson

Speakers include:
Bishop John R. Manz, Episcopal Vicar of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Rev. Calvin Morris, executive director, Community Renewal Society, and
Rev. Chuck Dahm, St. Pius Church, Pilsen;

Representatives Rod Blagojevich(D-Chicago, 5th District); Luis Gutierrez (D-Chicago, 4th District) and Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston, 9th District); and Alderman Ricardo Muñoz
(22nd Ward).

A number of undocumented immigrants will present
testimonies of the workplace abuse they have experienced because they lack legal status.

The Grassroots Collaborative is organizing this event to push for a new proposed federal law that would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain legal status. Undocumented immigrants pay taxes and fill many key roles in our economy. Many own homes, have spouses and children who are US citizens, and make enormous contributions to our communities. Yet, they are subject to abuse and exploitation because they lack legal status. Undocumented workers, in particular, are many times unable to organize for improved working conditions for fear of being reported to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). The AFL-CIO, business sectors, religious leaders, including Francis Cardinal George, and thousands of individuals have expressed support for a new amnesty.
