A Call for a Pink/Black Bloc for the Queer Pride Parade in Chicago June

24th

Chicago Anti-Bashing Network and Queers to the Left put together a contingent

for the Queer Pride Parade against Police Brutality

State Attorney Richard Devine is being targetted at the parade because of his

failure to prosecute officers that brutalize queer (and straight) victims of

police brutality and indifference to gay bashing. The Autonomous Zone will join

together with the contingent and is calling for a Black/Pink Bloc.

"Heterosexism is a capitalist plot and a form of domination. "Gays are

oppressed on a whim, but because of the specific need of capitalism for the

nuclear family, as the primary -- and inexpensive -- provider and carer for the

workforce, fulfilled in the nineteenth century and still fulfills an important

need for capitalism. Alternative sexualities represent a threat to the family

model because they provide an alternative role model for people. Gays are going

to be in the front line of attack whenever capitalism wants to reinforce family

values."" (from Denver

The Necessity of the Pink/Black Bloc

Police Brutality is a real issue for the Queer Community despite the fact

that the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP) tries to keep this issue from the

profile of police brutality due to their politics saying that gays are a disease

of capitalism and misogyny (male rights). They also percieve lesbianism as a

reaction to male patriarchy but they neither support or condone it.

We think this is wrong. Anarchists believe in the liberation of queers from

capitalism and state oppression. This is why the Pink/Black Bloc is needed. We

need to have an obvious pro-liberation presence against police brutality, the

commercialization and also the assimilation of the queer pride parade. The gay

and lesbian mainstream refuse to accept the fact that police brutality is a real

problem with in the queer community because they want to work with the police

department and work towards being accepted in mainstream society. This does not

work because:

"Whereas in Chicago, police officers were nearly 13% of the attackers in

recorded cases of anti-GLBT hate violence and harassment last year, according to

a study by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs. In other words,

given that police represent only 0.4% of Chicago's population, offenders in

cases of anti-GLBT violence are 30 times more likely to be cops than

civilians,

Whereas Gay-bashing by police has been a major portion of anti-police

brutality activism in Chicago over the past year, including protests and press

conferences around the racist/anti-Gay bashing by police of Frederick Mason Jr.,

and the cop Gay bashings of Jeffery Lyons, Kentin Waits, and Terry Phalen,

Whereas the Mason and Lyons cases were the exclusive subject of a landmark

February 2001 report by Amnesty International, the first ever such report on

gay-bashing by police in United States by that organization,"

(from the Proposed Resolution by CABN to the Oct. 22nd Coalition)

The Parade

People will begin to line up at 1pm at the southwest corner of Belmont and

Halsted for the Contingent, then they will proceed north on Halstead, south on

Broadway, east on Diversy to Sheridan rd.

At 1030-1100 am the Pink/Black Bloc will gather at the Autonomous Zone (3204

you out there standing in solidarity in the Parade and your support is welcome

and needed.
