Town Hall Meeting: Media & the Middle East

Chicago, IL– A panel of journalists, media professionals, policy analysts and activists will explore and debate dynamics in media coverage of issues related to the Middle East at a town hall forum beginning at 7PM on Wednesday, June 6 at DePaul University's Schmidt Academic Center Room 154, at 2320 N. Kenmore in Chicago. The event will include a public question and answer session designed to encourage debate and dialogue on the issue.

The June 6 panel will include: Marda Dunsky, assistant professor at Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism; Carl Schrag, former editor of the Jerusalem Post; Ghada Talhami, chair of the politics department at Lake Forest College; Steve Huntley, the editorial page editor for the Chicago Sun-Times; and media activist Ali Abunimah of the web-based Electronic Intifada. The panel will be moderated by noted African American radio personality Cliff Kelly of WVON AM Radio.

For most American media consumers, the Middle East remains a poorly understood region seemingly dominated by conflict, chaos and political extremism. Arabs and Muslims have often charged the corporate press with bias in reporting both the politics and the culture of the region. At the same time, rank-and-file journalists face increasing repression and even physical harm in covering the news in the Middle East.

“We are encouraging both panelists and the public to to explore the role the media plays in promoting prevailing impressions of the region in the United States,” says DePaul University Professor Aminah McCloud, who organized the town hall meeting. “Our goal is to open honest dialogue about the political dynamics that drive corporate press coverage in the region, and discuss strategies that the public can use to be smart consumers of news coverage.”

The event is being sponsored by DePaul University’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Admission is free. For more information, contact DePaul University Professor Aminah McCloud at 773-325-1290 or 773-418-0295.
