UIC Hospital & Service Workers
to Rally June 5th Against
Discriminatory Pay Policy

State Legislators Asked to Launch Investigation
---------------------------------------

On Tuesday, June 5th, State Senators Donnie Trotter, Barack Obama and Debbie Halverson will join University of Illinois employees who are demanding pay equity at the Chicago campus.

The workers are challenging a long-standing wage gap that pays workers at the
U of I-Chicago campus an average of approximately $2.20 per hour less than workers who perform the same jobs at the Urbana/Champaign campus. The legislature is being asked to investigate possible discriminatory pay practices within the U of I system. More than 85% of the service and maintenance employees at the Chicago campus are minorities, as compared to the predominately white workforce at Urbana/Champaign campus.

SEIU Local 73 represents nearly 1000 employees at UIC, including custodians, medical assistants, instrument makers, dental technicians, parking agents and mail messengers. Negotiations for two labor agreements are now going on with UIC.

In addition to pay equity, workers are bargaining for seniority rights and an end to the proliferation of extra help, temporary workers who receive no benefits or job rights at UIC.

TIME: RALLY AT 3:45 PM - 5 PM
