The Shortwave Report 5/25/01 ¡LISTEN GLOBALLY!

A 30 minute weekly review of international news and opinions, recorded from a shortwave radio. (13.8MB/mono/29:58) Free to rebroadcast upon notification. This week- Radio Netherlands, Deutsche Welle, China Radio International, Voice of Russia, Radio Havana Cuba.
This edition features news and opinions from Radio Netherlands, Radio Deutsche Welle, China Radio International, the Voice of Russia, and Radio Havana Cuba. From Netherlands- India has declared an end to its cease-fire with Kashmir; the US and Britain have a proposal for ending the sanctions against Iraq; and the allegedly biggest trafficker of the drug Ecstasy, an Israeli, is arrested in Spain with a US warrant. From Deutsche Welle's Man and Environment- a UN meeting is being held in Stockholm to make a pact to stop using 12 Persistant Organic Pollutants. Greenpeace has been protesting the disposal of these chemicals. From China Radio International- environmental groups in Sri Lanka want the US to "stop dumping" genetically-modified foods in their country, which has a ban in place against the importing of g-m foods. Then a press review- an editorial on Virtue, a report on unemployment and redundancy, and pickpockets in the subway. I put this in for curiosity. From the Voice of Russia, a commentary on Bush Jr's handling of established international treaties like the Kyoto Protocols, the ABM treaty, and the International Conventions on Biological Weapons. Also a delegation of European government ministers went to Washington to ask that Echelon, the US based global surveillance network, cease to exist. They were ignored. From Radio Havana Cuba- big worker protests in Argentina continue after weeks of blocking traffic; Cuba held a roundtable on the "subversive intent" of the new FTAA plans; workers are organizing around Latin America to protest the Free Trade Agreement; economic protests in the Dominican Republic escalate to guns and bombs; Bush Jr announces his opposition to lifting sanctions on Cuba; Bush Jr has some playmates over for dinner. All these intriguing stories plus times and frequencies for English-language broadcasts. I would really appreciate your comments, and an email if you air this program. The show is weekly, with a new edition up each Friday morning by 9am PDST. The next edition will be up on June 1st. The actual file location is: www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/swr_5_25_01.mp3
