WLS Interrupts to bring you Boeing

Around 2 P.M. CST Disney's local mouth piece, the Chicago ABC affiliate WLS, interrupted its programming for a special news report. Boeing announced that it had chosen Chicago for it's corporate headquarters, the voice on the TV chimed excitedly.

Now we've seen the corporate media devote a sickening ammount of time to Boeing since they announced their move last March, but today's "breaking story" has to take the cake. What possible news value does Boeing's final decision to land in Chicago have for the average person watching soaps on a Thursday afternoon?

Professional news organizations, which WLS-TV claims to be one of, use a few factors to decide what should and should not be reported. (These are the academic rules, not real world ones where politics and business weigh heavier than all these combined.) The broad criteria are a stories relevance, its usefulness and the interest of the topic.

With that in mind, I have a few questions and requests for the news team at WLS-TV:

Was the choice to report the Boeing story as "breaking news" based on it's relevance to the people of Chicago? If so, I'd like to see WLS produce a majority of the city's population that believes Boeing's moves will have any impact on their lives.

Did WLS choose to break the news because of it's "usefulness?" If so, will WLS please describe what utility this information has to the general public?

Or, was the news broadcast because people are interested? If this be the rational, WLS should show us how they came to this conclusion.

WLS cannot justify it's choice to report this story in the manner they did on any "hard news" value defense. The most the station could claim (outside the reality that this was Boing hype) is to state that the decision was based on "prominence"-being news that's news because a big name is involved. And such news is not news, it's irrelevant, useless and wholly uninteresting.
