Protesting Police Brutality is No Crime!

On October 22, 2002 the Chicago Police attacked a peaceful, legal march. The demonstration was part of a National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, a day when across the country voices cry out for justice and for an end to the epidemic of police abuse.

Seven protesters were arrested and charged with mob action. Some were picked out at random for arrest by the CPD Commander, others were grabbed at random. In jail arrestees were interrogated about their political activities and pressured to turn over the names of other activists. It was clear from police comments and questions in jail that the police actions were part of preparing for upcoming protests (TABD).

What does it mean when police break up peaceful demonstrations and protesters are pressured to turn over names?

In this ear of wartime repression our right to dissent is in jeopardy. Protests are treated like hostile acts and free speech rights suspended. Protests are surrounded by legions of riot cops. We can't allow protest to be criminalized and a climate of intimidation spread over our society.

For our movement to continue to grow, civil liberties must be defended! Resisters need to be defended, including in Court, in a way that sparks wider questioning of government repression. We can learn from the examples of victims of police brutality and their families. They've stood up with courage to expose the truth about the epidemic of "stolen lives" and have mobilized thousands to speak out.

Your presence in court will show solidarity with the October 22nd Defendants and show the Court we are watching. Bring your friends, classes, etc. Put Chicago Police on trial!
