Uptown marches for low cost and affordable housing
COURAJ, the Community of Uptown Residents for Affordability and Justice, led a march for low cost and affordable housing in Uptown this morning, Saturday May 5th. (article 8)
COURAJ, the Community of Uptown Residents for Affordability and Justice, led a march for low cost and affordable housing in Uptown on Saturday May 5th. They also led a public discussion at Truman College the same day. On Tuesday May 8th, the city will hold a hearing on the Wilson Yard TIF at 2pm at City Hall.
Their demands include:
- the CTA should sell the Wilson Yard for $1 so 200 units of low-cost housing can be built on the land
- anytime TIF funds are used for market-rate housing, 50% of the housing units must be affordable to low-income people
A handout distributed to the public during the march is titled "There's a Housing Crisis in our Community" and it points out that:
- Over 90% of the children who go to Uptown public schools qualify for the Federal free lunch program, meaning that their families make under $22,000 per year.
- During the last ten years in Uptown, we have lost approximately 1000 units of affordable housins, most of it to high-end condo development.
