Peoples Gas protest next Labor Beat

Community and labor protest against Peoples Gas
price and service abuses.
Behind the Myth: Chicago’s Natural Gas Crisis

In late March the Peoples Gas price crisis came to a head and created multiple protests involving community organizations and Gas workers.

Labor Beat interviews Gas Workers union (SEIU 18007) officers about their protests against cutbacks in the number of meter readers, and gets the main speeches (including Pat Quinn of Peoples Action) at the Utility Customers Coalition Convention at Malcom X, chaired by Rev. Al Sampson.

The UCC takes pains to distinguish itself from Operation Push—which has become a kind of ‘collection agency’ for Peoples Gas, and tries to define the issue as racial rather than economic. The Utility Customers Coalition seeks to define this as a fight between opposing economic classes.

Tom Brennan (R), Bus. Mgr. SEIU 18007 explains “Over the last three years 200 high-skilled workers have left and not been replaced. The Gas Co. is training former office workers with no skills to do their work. That goes right to the heart of safety of people of Chicago.”
