War in Iraq: It Has Begun

Coverage of the first hour of war.
The war has begun as much of the world has expected, but I was confused as the deadline passed at 8PM EST and there was no word from the president, but at 9:40 P.M. when I was watching a movie breaking news came in that Baghdad had turned on air raid sirens and anti-aircraft fire had begun. The war has started. I went by my work to inform them and they were pretty excited that the war has begun. I cannot see how anyone could be excited by a war, but we are a generation of movie-watchers and video-game-players so many people cannot grasp the concept that people will die.

The president gave a speech at 10:15 P.M. telling Americans and the world that “coalition forces have begun striking selected targets of military importance to undermine Saddam Hussein's ability to wage war.” The Pentagon has reported that the early fire upon Baghdad was to attempt to take out Saddam Hussein before the war begins, but they have not reported whether or not it was successful. The bombing is supposed to be ten-times more than it was in the Gulf War, but the beginning stages have not appeared to show this.
