URGENT STUDENT/YOUTH APPEAL

We are encouraging EVERYONE, YES EVERYONE, to WALK OUT of school at NOON (12pm) on the DAY AFTER the war begins and say NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL! WALK OUT! WALK OUT!! WALK OUT!!!
CALLING ALL CHICAGO AREA STUDENTS AND YOUTH!

On March 5 thousands of Chicago area high school, technical school, college and university students participated in the national day of student resistance initiated by the National Youth and Student Peace Coalition. We joined together with tens of thousands of students, from more than 400 schools, in saying No War On Iraq! Many of us went so far as to walk out of school risking disciplinary action. This signifies the recognition that WE, the students and youth, must do whatever it takes to STOP THIS WAR.

The cost of this war in both human and economic terms will be extraordinary and could potentially lead to WWIII. With the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians, not to mention the lives of tens of thousands of U.S. troops, are at stake we can not afford to remain passive in our opposition. We can wait no longer. The time has come for students and youth to step up our actions and raise the social cost of starting this war.

We are encouraging EVERYONE to WALK OUT of school at NOON (12pm) on the DAY AFTER the war begins and say NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL! WALK OUT! WALK OUT!! WALK OUT!!! The possible repercussions (ie. suspensions, detentions, groundings, name calling, etc.) are nothing compared to the horror and devastation that a war will wreak upon the people of Iraq. For those of you that are willing to push the envelope further please check out the "Menu" of targets for Civil Disobedience and Direct Action that are listed at www.chicago.indymedia.org. We're not sure who put it together but it's fantastic!!

For the March 5th day of national student resistance students/youth from "No War in Iraq" at the University of Chicago and members of "Students for Social Justice" compiled a database of all the various events taking place at different schools from throughout the Chicago area. With this information we put forward a unified press release (with the assistance of Hammerhard Media Works), which listed each action taking place and a contact person at each school, that was sent to all of the major/minor media outlets in the area. We also followed up the press release with telephone calls to ensure that the press release had been received and was being acted upon. As a result of these efforts the day's events received better coverage than many actions to date.

Once again we are volunteering to put together a unified press release for the actions taking place on the day after the war begins; one that is equitable and does not prioritize any one school or action over another. To accomplish this we are requesting that schools EMAIL US with their plans and a contact person. Information can be sent to dwlb (at) uchicago.edu and s4sj (at) hotmail.com. We also encourage you to contact the press at your school and in your particular community concerning your planned action.

Following the day's actions be sure to to converge upon Federal Plaza at 5pm to join with as many as 10,000 other people from the throughout the lesser midwest as part of the area's EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN. For additional information visit www.chicagoantiwar.org.
