Anti-Sweatshop RALLY at Northwestern Today!

After more than a year of campaigning, Northwestern Students Against Sweatshops seeks the voice of the community to tell its administration, "We want to make a concrete stand against sweatshops by joining the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC)."
RALLY FOR WORKER RIGHTS & CAMPUS DEMOCRACY!
MONDAY, APRIL 23, 4PM
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY MAIN LIBRARY PLAZA (DIRECTLY WEST OF NORRIS CENTER, EVANSTON, ILLINOIS)

During the past year, Northwestern Students Against Sweatshops (NSAS)--with the support of 60 faculty members, NU's International Center for Human Rights, and 3600 NU community members who signed NSAS's petition--has called on the university to join the Worker Rights Consortium, an organization that investigates working conditions in factories around the world that produce university apparel.

NU administrators have responded with stall tactics, failing to give substantive and specific responses to NSAS's 43-page research report on the industry and sweatshop-monitoring groups (see studorg.nwu.edu/peace/research.html). Monday's rally calls on administrators to take labor issues, as well as student and faculty concerns, seriously.

Come because you think human decency should not be sacrificed for university and corporate profits.

Partial list of speakers:

Jeff Danielski - Service Employees International Union, Local 1 representative (NU Justice for Janitors campaign)

Sarita Gupta - Jobs with Justice, Chicago

Stephen Eisenman - Faculty Against Sweatshops; Chair, NU Art History Department

Lenore Palladino - Chicago Student-Labor Action Project (SLAP)

Andrew Schleicher - University Christian Ministry

Also speaking will be a representative from Rep. Jan Schakowsky's office and other prominent involved community members.
