We Will Not Allow Akwesasne to Be Used

Statement by the Mohawk Governments at Akwesasne: Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council addressing the border crossing at
Akwesasne by FTAA protesters en route to Quebec City.
By the Mohawk Governments at Akwesasne:

The Akwesasne Mohawk Territory recognizes the fact that Mohawk People and Indigenous people world wide have been most impacted by free trade agreements which do not recognize nor include indigenous nations, human rights issues, labor and environmental issues. However, the Akwesasne Mohawk People will not allow its community to be used as an international
stage or staging point for protest against the summit of the Americas being held in Quebec City.

In compliance with Mohawk law, we ask that all protesters travel quietly and respectfully to their destination in Quebec City. We have never stated that we will open our borders to allow anyone to pass freely through Akwesasne to the Summit. Anyone wishing to cross will be required to follow normal protocol.

So as you travel through Akwesasne, we ask you to please treat our people and our land with respect. While there are concerns that need to be addressed, we ask that these issues and activism be reserved for the protest in Quebec City.

Our community is working towards building the seven generations. Our objective is to better our community as well as our environment.

To those who intend to pass through our Territory on your way to the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City, we hold you to your prior declarations that this demonstration is held peacefully. -30-
