CMAQ, the Quebec Independent media center, is readying the communication equipment to be used by independent journalist. Many independent journalists, mostly from Canada, have already arrived to cover the April 20 Summit of the Americas. There trade representatives and heads of state that will be present will be working to hammer out details of the Free Trade Area of the Americas.

The media convergence center in Quebec is getting close to running at full steam. There are two sections both within close distance of each other. As of Tuesday morning, over 200 journalists had registered with CMAQ, the organization running the media center.

The first room is the welcoming area at 620 Cote d` Abraham. There people can register to work with CMAQ and use the computers in that room for checking E-mail once they are registered. General information can be found in both French and English. A large detailed map of the area points out where the welcome center, People’s Summit centers and the security parameter are. There are also markers to indicate where one hour photo developing shops are.

The pressroom is the other half of the media center. The pressroom is where registered independents can type out stories, scan in photos and upload to the Internet. It is where the grunt work can be done.

Getting to the pressroom is easy from the CMAQ office. Walk out the door, turn left and walk up the street to the stairs on the left. At the bottom of the stairs look to the left and there’s the pressroom. The address is 591 Saint Vallier Est.

Inside is a 40 by 40 room with about 30 to 40 computers. There is a mix of Macs and PCs. A large schedule is posted to the wall on the right. So far the board goes up to April 19 and more will be added as the days progress. The board lists the day, time, event, location and who has volunteered to cover it.

The techs have been working on computer connections and the scanning equipment and hope to have everything complete by 9pm Tuesday night.

Also by the pressroom are the workshop rooms for the different media teams. Print, tech, audio, photo and visual groups will be working to get wider coverage.

CMAQ is looking for people to cover all the events but it is on a volunteer basis. People are also encouraged to work on their own stories. Journalist can post to the CMAQ site or other independent media sites.
