Congressman Urges Action Against Burge, Daley, Devine Lauds Ryan

US Representative Bobby Rush and attorney Larry Kennon put special prosecutors on notice that they want action not only against fired torture cop Jon Burge, but against Daley and Devine who worked with Burge and then failed to take legal action against him.

Congressman Bobby Rush is demanding action from special prosecutors investigating former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge. Burge was fired in 1993 after investigators found evidence of torture and abuse of black suspects.

Attorney Larry Kennon petitioned for a special prosecutor to investigate allegations against Burge. He says pardoned inmates Aaron Paterson, Madison Hobley, and Leroy Orange are proof that prosecutors need to pick up the pace of the investigation.

Justice Edward Egan and assistant prosecutor Robert Boyle were appointed to head the probe last year.

Kennon and Rush are also calling for police and prosecutors, including state's attorney Richard Devine and Mayor Richard Daley, to be held accountable for not taking action against Burge.

At the same time, Rush announced he is nominating former Gov. George Ryan for a Congressional Gold Medal for commuting the sentences of 157 death row inmates in Illinois. He'll also convene a congressional hearing on the death penalty in Chicago on Feb. 3.
