activists protest against immigrant registration (article 7)
Friday, January 10
Hundreds of activists protested in downtown New York City today to show their support for immigrants who stood in line at the INS building waiting to register with the U.S. Government. For men 16 and older from a list of 13 countries the U.S. Government deems a risk to security, today was the deadline to show up and register or face possible deportation.
This is the second wave of immigrants who must now register themselves even if there has been no change to their legal status in the U.S. Next week Pakistani and Saudi men must begin the process. The Pakistan government has openly criticized the policy and has asked the U.S. to reconsider the move.
