Illinois Governor George Ryan pardoned four death row inmates today, saying the evidence overwhelmingly indicated their innocence. The four, Aaron Patterson, Madison Hobley, Leroy Orange and Stanley Howard, charge that Chicago police tortured them to extort false confessions. The fate of more than 150 other death row inmates, many of whom allege the same abuses, is uncertain.
