At 1pm on New Year's Day over 250 people came out to Buckingham Fountain near Lake Shore Drive to ring in the new year for peace and to collect health kits for Iraqi people in case of U.S. aggressions.
Sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee the hour long event involved ringing bells in response to the many people taking turns at the microphone to voice their hopes of peace for the next year and beyond. One person said she felt that so much of peace on a larger scale really starts with ourselves, reminding us to think of how we treat people in our daily lives, whether it's on the El or at work.
A.F.S.C. has a long history of aid work, having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work in Europe after the second world war. Phillip Jones Griffiths, the anti-war photographer who produced the book Vietnam Inc., and no admirer of religion, pointed out in his book that of the three prosthetics hospitals in that country, only one was operating where it was of any use; in the war zone. This hospital was run by the Friends.

This is the first set of my pictures, the second set will be posted shortly. If you were at this event, please leave a comment with any of your thoughts. Thanks, Garth Liebhaber
