Chicago Student-Labour Day of Action Happenings: April 4th

April 4th is the national student-labour day of action, and Student Labour Action Project has planned events in Chicago.
Student and labour groups around the country, in association with Jobs with Justice, are organizing for a day of action on April 4th. The Chicago Student Labour Action Project (SLAP) group has organized events for that day here in Chicago, and would like to encourage all students, labour people, activists, and any other interested people in the Chicago area to come and help make this day a success. The schedule for the day is as follows:

12:00 noon (UNITE! Hall, 333 S. Ashland):
Discussion with UNITE! and SLAP about the ongoing campaign against the Lemon Scents laundry. Lemon Scents is a laundry in Chicago with mostly immigrant workers who work there in sweatshop conditions, and UNITE! has been working to make people more aware of this and to change this. Lunch will be provided.

1:30 p.m. (Hyatt McCormick, 2233 S. Martin Luther King Dr.):
Participate in flyering with UNITE! and SLAP at the Hyatt McCormick. This hotel uses Lemon Scents for their dry cleaning services. We will distribute flyers informing hotel patrons of Lemon Scents' labour practices and the hotel's use of this company.

4:00 p.m. (DePaul University, corner of State and Jackson Streets):
Rally in support of DePaul's Dump Sodexho campaign. Sodexho-Mariott is a food service company whose parent company, Sodexho Alliance, is a major investor in private prison companies (such as Corrections Corporation of America, and other companies in Great Britain and Australia). The company also has the lowest unionization rate of the major U.S. food service companies, and extremely aggressive anti-union practices. There will be speakers at the rally, including:
Stewart Acuff, Midwest Regional AFL-CIO
Reverend Calvin Morris, Jobs With Justice
Pari Zutshi, Prison Moratorium Project
Students from Campuses around Chicago

7:00 p.m. (Harold Washington College, 30 E. Lake St.):
Attend a panel on various aspects of privatization. The featured speaker will be Kamau Marcharia, a dynamic speaker who will discuss his experiences while wrongly imprisoned, including time in private prisons. Other speakers will include local activists and students from the Chicago area.

Please support SLAP, Jobs with Justice, and student-labour activism in Chicago by attending one or more of these events this Wednesday. Thank you.
