JERUSALEM -- A Palestinian gunman attacked a kibbutz in northern Israel late Sunday, killing five people, including a mother and her two small sons, Israeli authorities reported. Three others were wounded.

In a separate incident Monday, two Israel Apache helicopters fired missiles at a workshop near Palestine Square in central Gaza City, Palestinian sources said. Israeli officials said the incident was not in response to the kibbutz shootings.

The kibbutz victims were identified as Revital Ohayoun, 34; her sons Matan, 5, and Noam, 4; along with Dor Yitzhak, 44, who served as the secretary of the kibbutz; and Tirza Damari, 42, of Elichin. They were shot at Kibbutz Metzer, a collective village located near the pre-1967 border with the West Bank.

Police and army officials rushed to the scene but did not find the gunman, the reports said.

The newspaper Ha'aretz reported the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a militant offshoot of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Palestinian Authority condemned the attack.

"We will discuss this seriously," Arafat said Monday in Ramallah. "There is an investigative committee looking into what happened."

Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz called his security chiefs together to plan a military response to the incident. He was due to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon at Kibbutz Metzer to present his plan.

The kibbutz is near the site of an explosion earlier Sunday. In that incident, Israeli police ordered a car to pull over, and when it did, the car exploded.

Police said the two people in the car "were evidently two Palestinian suicide bombers." The blast killed only the two suspected terrorists.
