A Thousand Points of Gloom

The bellicose, greed-driven, anti-life policies of the present occupants in the Whitehouse leaves one to wonder just where all this Medieval gloom will lead and begs the question: why do so many others seem to follow?
Perhaps many of you recall those days of yesteryear when Bush the Elder proclaimed for all the world to hear, the dawn of the New World Order. It was with the fall of the Berlin wall and the end of the Cold War that George Herbert Walker Bush said, in so many words, what many already knew: the ruling elite of the United States of America intend to rule the world. Such dreams of conquest were once the mark of madmen or kings. We think Caesar, Napoleon, and Hitler here, but they’re all history. What we are witnessing today: the father’s legacy passed onto the son, is empire building far beyond what went before. The Bush doctrine, which suggests the first use of nuclear weapons and carries a hit list of nations rich in resources, may well be the greatest threat to peace and world stability ever contemplated.
In a feeble attempt to soften the glare of his New World Order, Bush the Elder spoke of a “Thousand Points of Light”, in which the rulers would appear well intended and serve the needy of the world. Ostensibly, it was about volunteerism and service, but realistically it was mere window dressing for the real agenda of economic, or if need be, military conquest.
Today, Bush the Younger, guided by the same cabal of far-right Republican operatives who surrounded his father’s administration, barely bothers with the ruse. Instead, he seems to have turned the Elder’s creation on its head, and like so many of the twisted sons of aristocracy’s past, crafted a monster darker than the patriarchs, something perhaps best described as having come out of Medieval times: say, a Thousand Points of Gloom.
In searching out those moments of unparalleled malignant and destructive policy on the dark side, I encountered an enlightening site: wage-slave.org has a Scorecard of Evil, tracking the Bush regime’s ever-growing list of outrages from day one in the dubious presidency of Dubya. Consider the following actions of the Bush regime: backing out of the Kyoto Protocol on Global Warming; the Anti-ballistic Missile Treaty; the International Germ Warfare Treaty Protocol; and literally threatening an assault on the International Criminal Court. Manufacturing a monstrous tax cut for the rich while raiding Social Security and sending the nation into debt. Undermining long-accepted environmental programs like the Superfund for cleaning up toxic waste dumped by corporations; wetlands protection; or the Clean Air Act. Refusing to cut arsenic levels in drinking water. De-funding population control programs and promoting an energy plan written by energy corporations. Moving from policies of international deterrence to pre-emption and suggesting the first use of nuclear weapons. Demanding changes of leadership in sovereign nations and territories. Introducing legislation that undermines the U.S. Constitution such as the so-called USA Patriot Act and restricting the Freedom of Information Act as well as overturning the Presidential Records Act. Withholding 5.1 million in funds earmarked for first-responders during 9/11 (especially disgusting after all those self-serving photo-ops and patriotic speeches). Had enough? The list goes on.
I don’t know if there was a thousand such moments of gloom cast over our nation’s integrity on the Wage-slave scorecard of Evil, but given time I’m sure the Bush regime is up to the task. But this leads one to ask if the option of time is really out there. The bellicose, greed-driven, anti-life policies of the present occupants in the Whitehouse leaves one to wonder just where all this Medieval gloom will lead and begs the question: why do so many others seem to follow?
