Courtroom solidarity has been requested for the last court case of 17 in connection with Reclaim The Streets 2001. Supporters are encouraged to respectfully attend the latest court hearing for Catherine Klocksin, which is set to go to trial this Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at 9 AM in Room 4007 of the Dupage County Courthouse, 505 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, IL.

Like most of the other seventeen defendants arrested on July 20, 2001 in downtown Naperville, Catherine was arrested and charged with mob action and resisting arrest.

Reclaim the Streets aimed to create a space for self-expression and empowerment of youth who feel stifled by a repressive suburban culture of consumerism & conformity. Peaceably assembled and armed only with their (supposed) freedom of speech, citizens and youth gathered in celebration and concern for local and global issues of justice including: police harassment of suburban youth, ecological destruction, and the Group of Eight summit taking place that day in Genoa, Italy.

The party was an act of solidarity with the millions of silent victims of globalization, and with the tens of thousands of anti-globalization activists who filled the streets of Genoa to spread the message that the G8 is about global superpowers making policies to further impoverish the poorest of the world’s poor and destroy our planet for profit.

A youthful, festive and PEACEFUL atmosphere turned into one of police terror and repression when protesters were pepper sprayed & hospitalized by area police. Seventeen unfounded and unjust arrests were made, in an attempt to put a chill on youth activism.

We demand all charges be dropped against the Reclaim The Streets Defendants. Being young and refusing to go along with the status quo is not a crime! If the State prosecutes the Reclaim the Streets Defendants it will have declared that youth in DuPage should be seen and not heard; a statement that youth who take a strong political stand on issues affecting the present and future of all humanity will be punished. This statement must not be allowed to stand. Such a precedent would strike a blow to our civil liberties, especially during this time when our freedoms are being put to the test.

Please join Catherine in support of freedom and justice at home and abroad. Attend her court hearing to show that along with many others you demand that all charges against the Reclaim the Streets Defendants be immediately dropped.
