Community support, empowered workers drive union victory

Seven thousand Chicago hotel workers approved an historic contract last week that provides more than 11.5% in wage increases per year and cuts health premiums by more than half. Seven thousand Chicago hotel workers approved an historic contract last week that provides more than 11.5% in wage increases per year and cuts health premiums by more than half. The largely immigrant and African American workforce, which had languished near the bottom of the pay scale nationally, endorsed the new contract after contentious negotiations and a vow to strike for the first time in the union’s history.
