PCUN Farmworker Speaking Event

Ramon Rameriz, PCUN Union President, will be speaking on Tuesday, 2/27/01 at Loyola Univerisity at 7pm, about farmworker working conditions and an international boycott against NORPAC frozen foods (in Chicago they are sold at Cub Foods under the names WestPac and Flav-R-Pac).
Ramon Rameriz, President of Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noreste (PCUN), will be speaking about the abusive conditions under which workers toil in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The local connection is that NORPAC, made up of 250 'coopertive farms, is the 7th largest frozen fruit and veggie distributor in the US. The foods are sold at Cub Foods under the name brand WestPac and Flav-R-Pac. They are also served in area campus dining halls, hospitals, and other institutions.

PCUN was organized over 20 years ago with the help of the United Farm Worker union. The workers, mainly Mexican immigrants, have been toiling in the Oregon fields for generations. They have also been seeking union recognition from the 250 NORPAC farms. These efforts have been met by physical, sexual, and verbal abuse. President Rameriz will be addressing these issues and talking about what can be done locally in Chicago to support the boycott and March 9th International Farmworker Day.

Everyone welcome. The event is free to the public.
