Teachers and students picket and rally at City Colleges

Timed for current contract negotiations, hundreds of GED, ESL (English as a Second Language), and Literacy teachers, students and program coordinators
will hold informational pickets and rallies at City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) locations today (Wednesday), July 24th and Thursday, July 25th. They are demonstrating their support for a simple goal: full-time pay and benefits for teachers and coordinators with full-time workloads; pay and benefits proportional to hours worked.

Such teachers at maximum salary and 15 years' experience currently make less than beginning Chicago Public School (CPS) teachers. While CPS teachers get $35 per preparation hour, Adult Education teachers receive $0.91/hour. Our 750 teachers and coordinators currently receive no sick days, no paid medical insurance and no vacation pay. Through their union, AFSCME 3506, they are also fighting to establish educationally-sound class size limits; some
classes have over 50 students. These teachers and students have 60,000 students annually; Adult Education has always been a money-maker for the CCC administration and Board. Through their union, the teachers, coordinators and supportive students are demanding: full-time status for full-time work!

Wednesday, July 24th: Kennedy-King College, 6900 S. Stewart, Noon-1 PM (Audrey Johnson)
Wright College, 4300 N Narragansett, 1-1:30 PM (Norma Carlson)

Thursday, July 25th: South Chicago Learning Center, 3055 E. 92nd St., 1-1:30PM (Zelda Traylor)

Daley College, 7500 S. Pulaski, 1-1:30 PM (Mark Freeman)
Lakeview Learning Center, 3300 N. Clark, 1-1:30 (John Lanier) and 7-7:30 PM (Jennifer Karmin)
