Prague Prisoners need Your Help

Prisoners in Prague, arrested this week, are being subjected to horrible abuse. Please call, fax, or email your witness to the human rights abuse.
Mass arrests have continued Wednesday and Thursday. One article reported that nearly a 1000 arrests have been made over the past few days. Many prisoners are not allowed food, water, sleep, or phone calls. The legal observers have gotten regular reports of prisoners being put through lines of police who beat them. Sexual harrasment and abuse of prisoners is also regular. The conditions are gruesome. for more information check the prague indymedia site. www.indymedia.org

Please forward these demands to public officials

1)that information be released to Embassies about who was arrested, when, for what reasons, and where they are being held.

2)Physical and sexual abuse must end immediately nad appropriate action must be taken against the offending officers.

3)Prisoners must be informed in their own language what they are being held for.

4)Comply with humanitarian Standards for all prisoners.

It may not be so important about how complete or exhaustive you are in your witness -- just that you make contact and ask for fair treatment of the prisoners. If anyone else has other email addresses please post them on the comments

This is another letter off of the praha indymedia site

I urge you to take immediate action to ensure the rights of the s26 prisoners in Prague.

In the world's eyes, they are entitled to due process. This includes the right of protection while in custody from all unnecessary restraints, such as shackles or cuffs; the right of protection from physical or sexual assault; the right to see their lawyers or representatives immediately, and on a daily basis; the right to contact by telephone their families; the right to medical attention from medical personnel other than those employed by the prison/jail systems; the right to speedy arraignemnt and the right to post bail, within 24 hours, as they have already been held for 24 hours. In addition, I would like to have public media representatives, including those of the Independant Media Center, to be allowed access to the jails where the protesters are being held, in order to reassure the world of their condition and the quality of their treatment while in your custody.

I am forwarding copies of this email letter to the Czech president's office, to Amnesty International, and to any other persons or organizations that I feel will help to ensure the rights of the s26 prisoners. Thank you for your speedy compliance with established humanitarian standards for the treatment of all prisoners.
