Americans don't know their leaders

Pew survey finds that American's cannot name top government officals.


A majority of Americans cannot name high ranking US officials, the Pew Center for the People and the Press' (www.people-press.org) Biennial Media Consumption survey finds.

When asked to name the secretary of defense 52 percent "didn't know" or "refused" to say, while 19 percent gave an incorrect name.

When asked to name the secretary of state 46 percent "didn't know" or "refused" to say, while six percent gave an incorrect name.

Knowledge of Europe's adoption of the Euro is more widespread than the names of these US government leaders. 44 percent of respondents "didn't know" or "refused" to say that the Euro was the EU's new currency, while three percent gave an incorrect answer.

When asked to name the vice president 35 percent "didn't know" or "refused" to say, while four percent gave an incorrect name.

Based on these figures, an average of 53 percent of Americans cannot name the most widely reported on Washington officials.
